I recently returned from the Summit Series Adventure Photography Workshop. The six day program was filled with many different shooting opportunities as well as classroom review, advice and inspirational instructor slideshows. The staff of photographers, filmmakers, and editors was first rate and included: Chris Burkard, Lucas Gilman, Keith Ladzinski, Corey Rich, Sadie Quarrier, Scott Willson, Ron Taniwaki, Brett Wilhelm along with world class athletes and a last minute guest appearance by founder and photography icon Rich Clarkson.

While I had never taken a photography class nor participated in a photo workshop before, I can’t imagine there could me a more thrilling, inspiring and informative weeklong program of its kind that surpasses the quality and breadth of instruction than that which the Summit Series Adventure Photography Workshop offers.

Exum Mountain Guides provided their services for the climbing photography session and were fantastic to work with; a top notch outfit to be sure.

Having the chance to spend the day on the Snake River with Jackson Hole Whitewater to photograph the kayakers and SUPer was awesome and there were many times I was able to benefit from individualized coaching from the instructors and staff.

One of the more lighthearted moments occured at the beginning of the overnight trip when, during the “how to pack” segment, Corey Rich explained one way he goes about dealing with uncooperative talent.

During the trail running segment the light was absolutely magical; my team worked on our visual storytelling assignment with Lynsey Dyer and Chris Burkard.

On our final morning we worked on a variety of lifestyle shots and I continued to experiment with new shooting techniques and think about the importance of how best to endeavor to tell a story with my images.

While the schedule was intense and the days long, I left Jackson Hole and the Adventure Photography Workshop with a whole new set of tools, ideas, techniques and philosophies to add to my photographic toolbox. I look forward to putting what I learned to work in the coming months and years and am excited to see where the path leads. Until next time… CH
